Music to Our Ears

Instrument 1:
What you'll need:
  • 2 cups
  • rice
  • tape
Put the desired amount of rice into one cup. Hold the two cups together and tape them on the seam! It's as easy as 1-2-3 to make this quick maraca!
Instrument 2:
What you'll need:
  • an open box
  • rubberbands
Fit the rubber bands around the box. Use different thicknesses and looser/tighter bands, this could change the pitch of the notes the strings will make!
Instrument 3:
What you'll need:
  • straws
  • tape
Select as many straws as you see fit, the more the better! Next, tape across the straws making sure they stay flat and even at the top. Lastly, cut the straws to different lengths to make different notes.

Sound is a force caused by the wiggles

The vibrations that travel within

Loudness, sound

Hard whacks and soft whacks

The loud and the quiet

Pitch is high

Pitch is low

Is it frequent

Or is it slow

Sound

Rice Shaker Maraca-Loudness
Guitar and Flute-Pitch

For this project I was challenged to make multiple instruments, one that can vary in loudness and another that can vary in both pitch and loudness. I chose to make three very simple instruments and have provided you with step by step instructions for each. Additionally, you will have the pleasure to enjoy a short poem about sound towards the bottom of my page.

What is sound?
Sound occurs when a specific force causes vibrations, in simpler terms a back and forth wiggle, within a given medium. Sound varies by both loudness and pitch. Sound can be louder by hitting a drum harder or blowing air harder into a flute, the opposite is true to make something quieter or softer. Lastly, pitch (also known as frequency) differs in some instruments as well. A good example of this is when you strum a guitar the tighter a string is or the smaller it is generally makes it have a higher pitch, while the larger, looser strings sound lower. Pitch varies due to the movement of sound-the more vibration the higher the note.
"A Poem About Sound" with music in the background by myself. Do note there is no video because each instrumental element was recorded separate to have the best sound quality, and then combined to create the final product. Enjoy!
