In this experiment we will compare the density of different kinds of water. Each glass of water will be exactly the same except they will have either salt, baking powder, or sugar in them. There will of course be a controlled variable as well, that is just regular tap water.

The Salt Water Experiment

Materials:

  • 4 Clear glasses

  • Salt

  • Baking Soda

  • Sugar

  • Water

  • Small gem stones, or another small item to float in the water-play around with this as it may be fun to see some things float while others sink in most of the situations. Just make sure you pick one in particular for the main experiment.

So How’s It Work?

By adding different substances to the water you made the water more dense, specifically in the instance of the salt water. This is why in places like the Dead Sea, that is 33.7% salt, everyone floats! Some substances provide different results, such as the baking soda. When baking soda dissolves in water some of it reacts to form carbon dioxide gas. If you look closely when you put baking soda in water you can see tiny bubbles in the reaction. As the carbon dioxide rises it will take any of the items suspended to the surface as well.
